Gestalt

08/30/12

This is an example of Gestalt theory of perception. When you look at this picture there are two images that you can see. The black figures look like two faces that are facing toward each other. However, the white space looks like a vase. Our minds switch back and forth and self organize the images in our mind.

David Smith

08/28/12

This is my own interpretation of David Smith's work. These objects were gathered from my room and arranged to form a stacked sculpture. The objects were balanced, however, if I were to capture the shapes with an over-spray then I would have been able to make the objects look abstract.

The second image is one of David Smith's sculptures. I find it interesting because it looks as if the object is defying gravity. The sculpture also looks perfectly balanced.

Design Inspired by Nature

This is an example of how nature is used to help design a car. This Mercedes-Benz was based on the boxfish. By modeling the car after this fish, the car's shape is more aerodynamic.

What is Design?

08/22/2012

This is an example of an advertising poster. This poster clearly communicates the definition of design through its organization. The designer uses visual organization by making the piece of gum appear as if it is a hand grasping at the shoe. That image also plays off the caption "most wanted brands." Not only should the customer want the shoe brand, but because of the image layout it creates the idea that even the gum is seeking out these wonderful brands. The pink grasping hand (gum) stands in contrast to the blank, white, and gray of the surrounding area. This helps to highlight the visual message via a visual solution.
